Coastlines and Landmasses

NOTE: This technique was developed by Butch Curry.

SOFTWARE: This technique uses Photoshop.

Step 1: Ensure image has RGB colord mode. With a new layer, Filter > Render > Clouds. Filter > Artistic > Cutout. Name this layer landmass creation.









Step 1a: Create a Fill/Adjustment "Threshold" layer. With the Burn or Dodge tools you can make adjustments on the layer you named "landmass creation."








Step 2: Using the Magic Wand. Make a selection on the Threshold layer. Now on a new layer, you can either proceed or make adjustments to the selection by clicking Select > Transform Selection.






Step 3: With the desired selection. Click Edit > Stroke. This will create your coastline.

Step 4: One a new layer. (Click Select > Modify > Expand by 4 pixels.) (Edit > Stroke.) (Click Select > Modify > Expand by 6 pixels.) (Edit > Stroke.) (Click Select > Modify > Expand by 8 pixels.) (Edit Stroke.)




Step 5: Select (Filter > Noise > Add Noise.) Settings: Monochromatic. Blend Mode: Multiply or Screen.
