Coastlines adapted from Old Guy Gaming

NOTE: I wanted to see how the Old Guy Gaming method compared to what I created using Butch Curry's method.

SOFTWARE: I used Photoshop--again.

Step 1: I used the original coastline from my previous post. Then added a plain white layer underneath.

Step 2: I filled in the coastline with black. Then I merged this image with the plain white layer below.

Step 3: According to Old Guy, filter > noise > add noise (select 100%, Gaussian, and monochromatic).

Step 4: Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur (set to 2 pixels).

Step 5: Image > Adjustments > Threshold (select 160).

Step 6: Here I broke away from his method. I needed to clean up the image. So I used the magic wand tool, selected the inside of the black island, then inversed the selection, and deleted the spots.

Step 7: I inversed the selection once more. Contracted the selection by two pixels. Then deleted the black. I added a white background so that I could see the coast line.

Step 8: At this point I went and added the coastal waves as Butch Curry described in his video.

BUTCH CURRY COAST

OLD GUY GAMING COAST

When comparing both methods side by side: I am impressed with the methods by Old Guy Gaming and would recommend this process. The coast has more variety in its composition. The coast looks more natural. Therefore a hybrid process creates the best coast.

I also have to note that I inversed the original step in Old Guy Gaming's tutorial. If you look at his tutorial you will notice that the black and white are opposite what I did. Some minor adjustments in the selection process fixed this discrepancy.
